

Marc Chagall
Marc Chagall was born in Vitebsk, Russia in 1887. He studied at the Imperial Society for the Protection of the Art in Saint Petersburg in his early years. Later he moved to Paris to further his studies. In 1914 he visited Russia and was prevented from returning to Paris due to the outbreak of the Russian Revolution. Chagall was the director of the Art Academy in Vitsyebsk for 1918 to 1919 and was the art director of the Moscow Jewish State Theater from 1919 to 1922. In 1923, Chagall returned to France to remain for the rest of his life except from 1941 until 1948, during World War 2, Chagall lived in the United States.
Chagall’s style and bold use of color can be traced to the influence of a combination of Russian expressionism and French cubism. Chagall is also known for biblical themes characterized in etchings.
